A society built by its members
The Optical Society of India was founded in 1965. The Society that started in a modest way with only a few dedicated members soon gathered momentum and developed into what it is today — a national body bringing together researchers, teachers, students, and industry working in optics and photonics.
Its affairs are conducted by an Executive Council elected from the membership, supported by office bearers based at the Department of Applied Optics & Photonics, University of Calcutta. The Society is a permanent scientific body: its register of life members, past presidents, and Distinguished Fellows is a record of optics in India.
Milestones
1965
The Optical Society of India is founded, starting with a small group of dedicated members.
1972
The Journal of Optics begins publication as the Society’s scientific record.
2009
The Journal of Optics is co-published with Springer, widening its international reach.
Today
Chapters across the country, annual national and international symposia, and a growing corporate and student membership.
Activities
Symposia and conferences
OSI has held annual national and international symposia for over four decades, hosted with universities and national laboratories across India.
Journal of Optics
Published since 1972 and co-published with Springer since 2009, the journal carries original research across optics and photonics.
Awards and fellowships
The Society recognises outstanding contributions through its medals, awards, and the election of Distinguished Fellows.
Chapters and outreach
Regional and institutional chapters run lectures, workshops, and student activities that take optics beyond the metros.

Refund / Cancellation Policy
OSI reserves the right to deny membership to the applicant, based on his/her academic interest/expertise . In such cases the membership fees will be refunded to the applicant’s source of payment.
